When Amazon Requires Poly Bagging

Sellers often assume bagging is only for fragile goods. In practice, Amazon's prep requirements - visible in Seller Central under Prep Guidance for each ASIN - call for poly bags in far more situations:

• Liquids: any bottle, jar, or pump container that could leak in transit must be bagged so a spill stays contained instead of ruining neighboring inventory.
• Powders, pastes, and granular products: protein powders, spices, bath salts, cleaning crystals - anything that can sift out of its packaging.
• Products without sealed retail packaging: if a customer can see or touch the product itself, Amazon wants a barrier between the product and the warehouse environment.
• Apparel, fabric, and plush: textiles must be protected from dust, dirt, and moisture during storage that can stretch across months.
• Items with small parts: sets whose components could separate need to be contained as one unit.
• Perforated or open packaging: boxes with hanging holes or display windows that expose the product usually need an overbag.

There is also a category of voluntary bagging that experienced sellers use even when Amazon does not force it. A poly bag is cheap tamper evidence, it keeps returned units in resellable condition more often, and it prevents scuffed retail boxes - one of the most common reasons customers file a used-sold-as-new complaint. For products with thin margins for negative feedback, bagging is insurance that costs cents.

Amazon Poly Bag Requirements in Detail

These are the rules Amazon enforces at fulfillment center check-in. Every one of them is a place where a shipment can fail.

Bag Thickness: 1.5 Mil Minimum

Amazon requires poly bags to be at least 1.5 mil thick. Thin bags tear on conveyors and during totes handling, and a torn bag equals a prep defect. We stock 1.5 mil as our baseline and step up to 2 or 3 mil for heavy units, sharp-edged retail boxes, and products that will sit in long-term storage. Heavier gauge costs slightly more per bag but is far cheaper than a leak claim or a damaged-unit write-off.

Suffocation Warning Labels

Any poly bag with an opening of 5 inches or wider, measured laid flat, must display a suffocation warning. The warning may be printed directly on the bag or applied as a label, and the minimum print size scales with bag size:

• Bags with combined length plus width of 60 inches or more: 24 point type
• 40 to 59 inches combined: 18 point type
• 30 to 39 inches combined: 14 point type
• 29 inches or less combined: 10 point type

This is the single most common poly bag violation we see on inventory that arrives from overseas suppliers: either no warning at all, or a warning printed too small for the bag size. Nearly all bags in our stock come with the warning pre-printed at the correct size, and when we overbag into a non-printed bag we apply a compliant warning label every time. This is not just an Amazon rule - it is a child-safety requirement, which is why Amazon enforces it without exceptions.

Sizing, Sealing, and Barcode Visibility

A compliant bag also has to fit and close properly. Amazon expects the bag not to extend more than 3 inches past the product, because loose excess plastic snags on automation equipment. The bag must be fully sealed - heat seal, self-seal adhesive, or tape that will not lift - so nothing escapes and nothing gets in. And the bag must be transparent enough that the product is identifiable, with the FNSKU barcode scannable without opening the bag. Our default is to apply the FNSKU label on the outside of the sealed bag, which eliminates scan-through misreads caused by wrinkles and glare. When a product carries an exposed manufacturer barcode that conflicts with the FNSKU, we cover it so warehouse scanners never grab the wrong code.

How the Process Works, Step by Step

1. Intake and requirements check. You send us your ASINs and route your inbound freight - from your supplier, from a port, or from your own warehouse - to our West Berlin address. Before anything arrives we confirm the prep requirements in Seller Central for each SKU, so bag sizes and label needs are decided in advance.

2. Receiving and count verification. When cartons land we log them the same day, verify piece counts against your packing list, and flag any shortages or transit damage immediately. You hear about problems from us, not from an Amazon receiving discrepancy weeks later.

3. Inspection before bagging. A bag locks the product's condition in. Bagging a defective unit just means paying to prep something a customer will return, so we check condition first. For high-value or high-return-risk catalogs, a deeper product inspection can be added at this stage.

4. Bagging and sealing. Units are bagged in the correct size and gauge, sealed, and checked for the suffocation warning. Bundles and multi-packs are assembled first, then bagged as a single sellable unit with one FNSKU on the outside.

5. Labeling and final scan check. FNSKU labels go on the outside of each bag, conflicting barcodes are covered, and we test-scan units from each batch to confirm clean reads.

6. Carton packing and shipment. Finished units are packed to Amazon's carton weight and dimension rules, shipment labels from your Seller Central account are applied, and boxes go out via the carrier of your plan. If your sales velocity does not need everything inbound at once, the remainder can sit in our storage and ship in waves.
